Ground Cherry, AUNT MOLLY’S

Ground Cherry, AUNT MOLLY’S

This variety dates back to at least the 1920s as a commercial crop. Physalis pruinosa is said to be found from Mexico to Central America. "Aunt Molly's" gained recognition by the Slow Food movement, this variety featuring in the 'Ark of Taste'. Flavour is very sweet, tropical fruit-like, a mixture of pineapple (without the tart components) and vanilla somewhat. From our taste test, we think it'a also reminiscent of passion fuit. Not to be confused with the large-fruited Tomatillo. It can self-seed but is best started indoors (in March here) for a greater yield. Unsurpassed in jams and jellies (if we can hold ourselves from eating them raw right off the row). Gather from underneath the plants: the ripe fruits have a dry straw-colored husk and drop to the ground when ready. The husk protects them from dirt. Pale yellow fruit and surprisingly long lasting in the husk after harvest if kept indoors. Grown as an annual crop here. Do not bury seed too much as it seems to benefit from light to germinate.
