Tomatillo QUEEN OF MALINALCO
A regal character of a tomatillo from Mexico. I decided to put this variety in a trial as few tomatillo varieties are available to us, even though I thought it would be way too late to give fruits. Surprised, I harvested some fruits the first year I grew it, and again last year, elegantly held pendulous on a branching umbrella-shaped plant. The fruits have an unusual long, pointy heart shape (Acorazonado is its other name). And it yielded abundantly even though it is a little later than Dr Wyche’s. This strain came from an introduction by the Botanical Explorer, J. Simcox, via Baker Creek Seeds. From a taste perspective, when fully ripe and yellow, they are sweet, with a fruity taste reminiscent of both cherry tomatoes and ground cherries. They can be eaten raw, adding sweetness and a special texture to a salad. But most of the tomatillo varieties we grow, both green and ripe, end up into beautiful canned salsas.
