Tomato, EGG YOLK

Tomato, EGG YOLK

Juicy, yellow, large cherry tomato. A not-so-recent introduction that deserves a place of its own. It is said that this variety was first introduced by Larry Pierce from Missouri USA after four years of initial growing (selection). Apparently a seedling among ‘Moldovan Green’ tomatoes, this variety is sometimes called sport (chance mutation) and sometimes referred to as a chance cross. I would rather think it is the second option as I saw a green fruited off-type among my plants this year (a not completely stable yet cross so it seems). Which is to me quite interesting - as it means more genetic diversity among seedlings.  So, it’s a large sweet yellow cherry type, very productive, and yes, mostly yellow although if you’re lucky enough you may find a green-when-ripe* type too (aka GWR) , or green-yellow with greenish juice inside.

Early enough to be grown outside. I am picky when it comes to tomatoes and this one passed the test. Indeterminate plants that require some sort of robust trellising if they must share their space with smaller plants like Basil. Got my initial seeds from a Belgian line of ‘Egg Yolk’.

*How to tell when a GWR-type is ripe and ready to eat? It’s not the looks, because it’s still green, rather, it’s how soft or hard the fruit is. If it’s soft (think ripe tomato) when a finger applies slight pressure, it’s ripe.
