Barley, DANGO MUGI

Barley, DANGO MUGI

Hulless Barley Basics: The hulless barley is placed in a bag and its seeds are easy to thresh (extract) from the dried plants and yield ready to use grains (sprout, grind or cook like rice) after some winnowing in the breeze or (more straightforwardly) with a fan! (Take my advice and do this cleaning out of doors, whenever possible... ) No dehuller required and all work can get done by hand. An edible ornamental grain. I go to harvest twice (by hand) a week or so apart. Originally from Japan; has been collected and shared through the Kusa Seed Society and Great Lakes Staple Seeds (USA). The grains are, like those of Sumire Mochi, of a glutinous type (please my page on Sumire Mochi Barley for the info). A 6-Row variety (grains are located on 6 rows as viewed from above) and spring planted here. Beige seeds are smaller than other hulless barley I grow. Tried soaking overnight and cooking: good for simmered dishes, soups… (3rd image, cooked grains)
