Bean, FAMILLE FORTIN
One of my first encounter with local heirlooms a little more than 15 years ago, this bean is an heirloom from the Fortin family in Cap Saint-Ignace, Quebec. "Famille Fortin" is a good dual-purpose bean especially for short seasons. It has reliably matured its seeds every single year I've grown it (and I was located in Lanaudière, zone 3, in those days). Looks like a slicing bean type. Pale flat yellowish green immature pods will however become stringy when they plump up, so harvest early - or use as shelly or dry. Medium size white shiny seed with a typical brown "figure" or mark around the hilum, similar to 'Soldier' . Given its moderate size, this plant is still a good producer. Excellent as a dry bean for your next recipe of tasty, large baked beans. Plants need good aeration - do not overcrowd them, especially if you get a rainy spell before or during pod set - or sclerotinia mold may show up. This strain was sourced from another Seeds of Diversity grower member and I have grown them nearly each year ever since.
