Tomato, LONGKEEPER

Tomato, LONGKEEPER

Selected in the 1890’s, aka Burpee’s Long-Keeper. Heirloom winter storage tomato. Some varieties of tomato show traits of slow-ripening, which make them great for storage into winter, for weeks to months - no canning necessary (check out our Regina di Torre Canne too). I store them in an open tray, lined with newspaper or cardboard, near a window that remains cool (not cold) in winter and receives no direct sunlight; others recommend storage in a dark place. They can probably last longer that way but I still have to try this method.

If space is available, the best way is probably to hang the whole plant upside-down; while the leaves and vines dry out, the fruits ripen slowly to a reddish-orange color. Ripe tomato fruits are softer to the touch. We do not keep bruised fruit as they won’t last long.

Make sure to harvest before first frost.
