Lettuce, MESCHER

Lettuce, MESCHER

From our second or third sowing from overwintered plants! Simply put, it’s cold hardy enough to overwinter here, under snow, but it looks a LOT nicer when sown in early spring! (judge by the pictures, the small leaves are just coming out from under the weight of winter snow vs a spring-sown rosette, later on) To get the best of the pretty, small rosettes of this Mescher lettuce, spring sowing is ideal. My initial seeds came from the collection of F. Morton/Wild Garden Seeds. Very old, tasty butterhead heirloom from Austria.

Availability: we will be adding more as needed. Most items listed as OUT OF STOCK may only be temporarily unavailable - We will be adding more soon, unless *LAST ONES AVAILABLE * is mentioned.

Our seeds are packaged by weight. The actual number of seeds indicated per packet may differ, but we do our best to include at least (generally more) the quantity mentioned. The quantity depends on the seed germination scores so as to include the right number of viable seeds.

  • Seed Starting

In general, lettuce seeds are started about a month before the chosen date of planting. Lettuce seedlings tolerate cool temperatures in spring and can be planted two weeks to a month before the last spring frost given they are small. Transplant during an overcast day or shade the seedlings to keep them free from sunscald. Direct seeding is also an option, although germination rates are generally lower.
