Preparing variety trials, crossing varieties, growing them out, taking notes and selecting through progeny is labor-intensive and requires (garden) space. This ‘extra’ work means that through breeding programs I am able to 1) develop interesting varieties that were grown in this climate. 2) release soon a number of freed varieties (without patents or royalties, like heirloom varieties) - which means that this part of my business brings no or nearly no income (even though we can eat part of the harvest in some cases). The more surface we can allow to one breeding project, the more diverse plants are grown, the more chances we get to find exceptional types. (I must add that I do not work by contracts and do not take varietal ’orders’ : natural genetics bring us random surprises (sometimes admirable) that show up, which we welcome respectfully - so I must mention that because of the very nature of this work, I want it to remain independent.)
